Call for Applications

The His­to­ri­sches Kol­leg invi­tes appli­ca­ti­ons for up to 6 full-year fel­low­ships during the 45th aca­de­mic year (1 Octo­ber 2024–30 Sep­tem­ber 2025).

The Advan­ced Fel­low­ships are aimed at scho­lars in all his­to­ri­cal disci­pli­nes who are employ­ed at uni­ver­si­ties or non-uni­ver­si­ty rese­arch insti­tu­ti­ons and have demons­tra­ted out­stan­ding rese­arch achie­ve­ments. They ser­ve to com­ple­te a major aca­de­mic mono­graph. Ger­man fel­lows are expec­ted to take lea­ve of absence from their uni­ver­si­ty or rese­arch insti­tu­ti­on for the fel­low­ship year while con­ti­nuing to draw their sala­ry. The Kol­leg covers the cos­ts of their repla­ce­ment. Curr­ent­ly, the Fritz Thys­sen Foun­da­ti­on, the C.H. Beck Foun­da­ti­on, the Free Sta­te of Bava­ria and the Käte Ham­bur­ger Cen­ter for Advan­ced Stu­dy in the Huma­ni­ties “Dis:connectivity in Pro­ces­ses of Glo­ba­li­sa­ti­on” pro­vi­de fun­ding for the fel­low­ships. The Fel­low­ship of the Käte Ham­bur­ger Kol­leg “Dis:connectivity in Pro­ces­ses of Glo­ba­li­sa­ti­on” is award­ed for rese­arch in glo­bal history.

The His­to­ri­sches Kol­leg in Munich is an Insti­tu­te for Advan­ced Stu­dy of all histo­ry-rela­ted disci­pli­nes. It is housed in the Kaul­bach Vil­la bet­ween the Bava­ri­an Sta­te Libra­ry and the Eng­lish Gar­den. Fel­low­ships at the Kol­leg grant scho­lars the free­dom to con­cen­tra­te on com­ple­ting a book pro­ject. This core idea of the Kol­leg has hel­ped pro­du­ce many impactful books, many of which have found favour even bey­ond the field of histo­ry its­elf. As a venue for aca­de­mic col­lo­quia and lec­tures, the Kol­leg is a lively cent­re of his­to­ri­cal research.

The Fel­lows are sel­ec­ted by the board of trus­tees of the His­to­ri­sches Kol­leg with the sup­port of exter­nal expert advi­sors. The appli­ca­ti­on dead­line is 30 April 2023. All appli­ca­ti­ons will be trea­ted con­fi­den­ti­al­ly. All decis­i­ons are final.

The His­to­ri­sches Kol­leg in Munich is an Insti­tu­te for Advan­ced Stu­dy of the his­to­ri­cal­ly ori­en­ted sci­en­ces. Sin­ce 1988, the His­to­ri­sches Kol­leg has been loca­ted in the Kaul­bach Vil­la, situa­ted bet­ween the Bava­ri­an Sta­te Libra­ry and the Eng­lish Gar­den. It grants scho­lars the free­dom to com­ple­te a book pro­ject in a con­cen­tra­ted man­ner through scho­lar­ships. This foun­ding idea of the col­lege has given rise to num­e­rous works that have had an impact bey­ond the disci­pli­ne. As a venue for sci­en­ti­fic col­lo­quia and lec­tures, it is a lively cen­ter of his­to­ri­cal research. 

During the fel­low­ship year, the fel­lows are freed from uni­ver­si­ty tea­ching and admi­nis­tra­ti­ve duties and can con­cen­tra­te ful­ly on their sci­en­ti­fic pro­jects in a stu­dy in the Kaul­bach Vil­la. In this they are sup­port­ed by the staff as well as the stu­dent assistants of the col­lege. Each Fel­low pres­ents his or her topic at a public lec­tu­re in the Kaul­bach Vil­la during the Kol­leg year. During the stay at the His­to­ri­sches Kol­leg, stu­dents are requi­red to resi­de in Munich. The col­lege office is available to assist in fin­ding housing. Sub­si­dies are pro­vi­ded for relo­ca­ti­on and ren­tal costs.

Funds for the fel­low­ships come from pri­va­te gran­tors. Curr­ent­ly, the Advan­ced Fel­low­ships are fun­ded by the Fritz Thys­sen Foun­da­ti­on, the Free Sta­te of Bava­ria and the Käte Ham­bur­ger Cen­ter for Advan­ced Stu­dy in the Huma­ni­ties „Dis:connectivity in Glo­ba­liza­ti­on Pro­ces­ses“. The Con­so­li­da­tor Fel­low­ships are fun­ded by the Ger­da Hen­kel Stif­tung, Stif­ter­ver­band für die Deut­sche Wis­sen­schaft, the His­to­ri­cal Semi­nar of the LMU and the Fri­ends of the His­tor­sches Kolleg.
