Honorary Fellowships

Honorary Fellowships

The Historisches Kolleg awards Honorary Fellowships twice a year for a maximum of six months.

Applications are open to outstanding scholars who wish to live and conduct research at the Historisches Kolleg, in the immediate vicinity of the Bavarian State Library, for shorter periods of time (maximum six months).

Fellowship at the Historische Kolleg

The fellowship is aimed at scholars in Germany and abroad. Honorary Fellows enjoy a period of focussed research away from their home university, drawing on the inspiring work environment at the artist’s villa built by Gabriel von Seidl in the heart of Munich to complete a major academic project.

Honorary Fellows are guests of the Historisches Kolleg and can live and work in the Kaulbach Villa. The technical infrastructure and staff of the villa are available to support their academic work. No remuneration will be granted. Fellows are expected to present their research to an academic audience in the form of a lecture or some other academic format during their stay at the Kolleg. They are further free to benefit from academic life at the Kolleg (colloquia, etc.) and the many advantages Munich holds for researchers.

Application Process

Please send your informal application with a short project outline (maximum 5 pages) by e-mail to the administration office of the Historisches Kolleg (fellowship@historischeskolleg.de). Please specify the desired start date and duration of the fellowship.

Selection Procedure

Fellows are selected by the Historische Kolleg’s board of trustees. All applications will be treated confidentially. All decisions are final.

Honorary Fellowships

Creating free spaces – that is the central idea of the Historisches Kolleg. Since 1980, it has offered excellent scholars the freedom to research, think, and write for one year (October to September of the following year) to bring a major work to completion.
