Advanced Fellowships

Advanced Fellowships

Call for Applications

The Historisches Kolleg invites applications for up to 6 full-year fellowships during the 46th academic year (1 October 2025-30 September 2026).

The Advanced Fellowships are aimed at scholars in all historical disciplines who are employed at universities or non-university research institutions and have demonstrated outstanding research achievements. They serve to complete a major academic monograph. German fellows are expected to take leave of absence from their university or research institution for the fellowship year while continuing to draw their salary. The Kolleg covers the costs of their replacement (see guidelines for the awarding of fellowships, french). Currently, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the C.H. Beck Foundation, the Free State of Bavaria and the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Dis:connectivity in Processes of Globalisation” provide funding for the fellowships. The Fellowship of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg “Dis:connectivity in Processes of Globalisation” is awarded for research in global history.

The Historisches Kolleg in Munich is an Institute for Advanced Study of all history-related disciplines. It is housed in the Kaulbach Villa between the Bavarian State Library and the English Garden. Fellowships at the Kolleg grant scholars the freedom to concentrate on completing a book project. This core idea of the Kolleg has helped produce many impactful books, many of which have found favour even beyond the field of history itself. As a venue for academic colloquia and lectures, the Kolleg is a lively centre of historical research.

The Fellows are selected by the board of trustees of the Historisches Kolleg with the support of external expert advisors. The application deadline is 30 April 2024. All applications will be treated confidentially. All decisions are final.

The Historisches Kolleg in Munich is an Institute for Advanced Study of the historically oriented sciences. Since 1988, the Historisches Kolleg has been located in the Kaulbach Villa, situated between the Bavarian State Library and the English Garden. It grants scholars the freedom to complete a book project in a concentrated manner through scholarships. This founding idea of the college has given rise to numerous works that have had an impact beyond the discipline. As a venue for scientific colloquia and lectures, it is a lively center of historical research.

During the fellowship year, the fellows are freed from university teaching and administrative duties and can concentrate fully on their scientific projects in a study in the Kaulbach Villa. In this they are supported by the staff as well as the student assistants of the college. Each Fellow presents his or her topic at a public lecture in the Kaulbach Villa during the Kolleg year. During the stay at the Historisches Kolleg, students are required to reside in Munich. The college office is available to assist in finding housing. Subsidies are provided for relocation and rental costs.

Funds for the fellowships come from private grantors. Currently, the Advanced Fellowships are funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the Free State of Bavaria and the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities „Dis:connectivity in Globalization Processes“. The Consolidator Fellowships are funded by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung, Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, the Historical Seminar of the LMU and the Friends of the Historsches Kolleg.
